Diane Arbus

ARBUS, DIANE (1923-1971) "Waitress, Nudist Camp, N.J." Silver print, 2 7/8x2 3/4 inches (7.3x7 cm.), with Arbus' signature (twice), the title, print date, her notation "Not to be Reproduced," and a short inscription, in ink, on verso. 1963; printed before 1967 Estimate $15,000-25,000 Purchased from Sotheby's, October 7, 1993; to the Collection of Phillip Periman. The inscription reads: "Dear C., P. and S, Please do go to the Museum of Modern Art, Main Floor, West Wing (across from J. Pollock) to see the New Documents 1/3 of which are mine..." Also with the original mailing envelope addressed by the photographer in ink and with her "131 1/2 Chas St. NYC 10014" return address, also in her hand, and postmarked April 20, 1967. The "New Documents" exhibition opened at MoMA on March 6, 1967, and included work by Arbus, Winogrand, and Friedlander.
