Shusaku Arakawa, Serigraph, ‘The Old Story’’’’, USA, 1967 Serigraph in colors on cardboard USA, 1967 Shusaku Arakawa (1936-2010) – Japanese painter and graphic artist Lower right signed in pencil „Arakawa“ Lower left numbered in pencil ‘60/100’’’’ On the right signed ‘ARAKAWA’’’’ Titled and dated in the print Sheet size: 90 x 69.3 cm The use of writing is typical of the artist's works. In the present serigraphy a poem from the "Illuminations" by Arthur Rimbaud is printed, in the upper half in French, in the bottom in English. Both texts, printed in medium gray on light gray ground are, framed in star-shape, whereupon only the lower one is designed in chromatic colors. The serigraph is signed lower right in pencil ‘Arakawa’’’’, numbered lower left in pencil ‘60/100’’’’ and signed on the right in the image ‘ARAKAWA’’’’. It is dated and titled in the print. The sheet is with minor signs of use and age. It measures 90 x 69.3 cm. Shusaku Arakawa (1936-2010) Shusaku Arakawa was born in Nagoya, Japan. He initially studied mathematics and medicine in Tokyo, but then added a study at the School of Art at Musashino. In 1961 he moved to New York, where he worked with his partner Madeline Gins since 1963. Arakawa was represented at Documenta 4 (1968) and 6 (1977). With typical image elements, such as lettering, diagrams or collage elements, he often created ironic, ambiguous work, reminiscent of Marcel Duchamp Dadismus. (fea)
