In Ins ist Albert Anker geboren, in Ins ist er auch gestorben. Das Dorf liegt im Berner Seeland an der Grenze zum Kanton Freiburg. Zu Ankers Zeit zählte das Bauerndorf etwas mehr als 1000 Einwohner. Umgeben von Ackerland und, damals, von Rebbergen, bietet Ins eine weite Aussicht über Bieler-, Neuenburger- und Murtensee auf den Jura und die Alpen. Das sogenannte Albert Anker-Haus, 1803 vom Grossvater des Künstlers erbaut, steht noch heute in Ins und wird von Ankers Nachfahren bewohnt und betreut. Das Atelier des Künstlers im Dachgeschoss des stattlichen Bauernhauses ist bis heute fast unverändert geblieben und kann besichtigt werden. In diesem Atelier entstanden auch die meisten Gemälde Albert Ankers. Ins war die wichtigste Inspirationsquelle des Künstlers. Es war nicht die Avantgarde-Stadt Paris, wo Anker 35 Winterhalbjahre verbrachte, welche die Themenwelt des Künstlers prägte, sondern die ländliche Umgebung seines Heimatdorfes. Viele seiner Modelle für Portraits und Genreszenen stammen aus Ins. So auch Bertha Gugger. Bertha war die Tochter des Inser Ehepaars Gugger-Küffer. Sie ist auf dem Gemälde mit ihrer Tochter dargestellt. Fast andächtig ist Bertha in ihre Strickarbeit versunken, liebevoll und konzentriert wird sie von ihrer Tochter bei der Arbeit beobachtet. Der grüne Kachelofen, auf dem der Künstler signiert hat, rahmt die liebevolle Szene auf der rechten Bildseite ein, während die linke Bildkante von einem hellbraunen Türrahmen abgeschlossen wird. Der Eintrag vom 13. August 1898 im Livre de vente des Künstlers lässt darauf schliessen, dass Albert Anker das Werk für 500 Franken an den damaligen Präsidenten des Kunstvereins der Stadt Solothurn, Franz Anton Zetter-Collin, verkauft hat. Das Ölgemälde ist seither im Besitz der gleichen Familie geblieben und seit über 80 Jahren nicht mehr öffentlich gezeigt worden. Bertha Gugger mit Tochter war letztmals in zwei frühen Ausstellungen zu besichtigen; 1911, ein Jahr nach dem Tod des Künstlers, im Kunsthaus Zürich und zum hundertsten Geburtstag Ankers, 1931, im Kunstmuseum Bern. He was born in Ins and died there as well. The village lies in the Berner Seeland on the border with the canton of Fribourg. During Anker's time, the farming village had little more than 1000 inhabitants. Surrounded by farmland and, at that time, by vineyards, Ins offers sweeping views of the lakes Bienne, Neuchâtel and Morat toward the Jura mountains and the Alps. The so-called Albert Anker House, built in 1803 by the grandfather of the artist, is still in Ins and is inhabited and maintained by his descendants. The studio of the artist on the top floor of the stately farmhouse remains almost unchanged and can be visited. In this studio, the majority of Albert Anker's paintings were created. Ins was the most important source of inspiration for the artist. It was not the avant-garde city of Paris, where Anker spent 35 winter seasons, which shaped the thematic world of the artist, but the rural surroundings of his home village. Many of his models for portraits and genre scenes come from Ins. Such was the case of Bertha Gugger. Bertha was the daughter of the local couple Gugger-Küffer. She is shown in the painting with her daughter. Almost devoutly, Bertha is consumed in her knitting, as she is lovingly and acutely watched by her daughter. The green heating oven, on which the artist has signed, frames a loving scene on the right side, while the left edge of the image is completed by a brown door frame. An entry from 13 August 1898 in the livre de vente of the artist suggests that Albert Anker sold the work for 500 francs to Franz Anton Zetter-Collin, the then art association president of the city of Solothurn. The oil painting has since then remained in the possession of the same family and has not been shown in public for over 80 years. Bertha Gugger mit Tochter was last displayed in two early exhibitions; in 1911, one year after the death of the artist at the Kunsthaus Zurich and for what would have been Anker's one hundredth birthday, in 1931, at the Kunstmuseum Bern.
