Description:
LUKE ANGUHADLUQ (1895-1982), E2-294, BAKER LAKE UNTITLED stonecut and stencil 1972, A/P III/III (3/3) , unframed 39.5" x 24.5" — 100.3 x 62.2 cm. Provenance: Work sourced by Jack & Sheila Butler for the vendor. Note: “One of the most significant Inuit artists the western world has encountered...”, Luke Anguhadluq was 73 when he began to draw, after having lived as a hunter out on the land all of his life. Only a small edition was produced of this fabulous print that depicts one of Anguhadluq’’s favourite subjects. His fanning out of the dancers around a central drummer conveys a sense of community and joyous occasion. Meeka Walsh, Luke Anguhadluq, Baker Lake Prints and Drawings 1970-1982 , The Upstairs Gallery, pg. 2

Description: LUKE ANGUHADLUQ (1895-1982), E2-294, Baker Lake HUNTING CARIBOU FROM KAYAKS, stonecut and stencil, 1976, 16/19, unframed, sight, 25" x 39.5" - 61 x 96.5 cm. Note: "In the autumn, the Inuit camped near the usual crossing places of the migrating caribou herds, hunting the animals from kayaks as they swam across the rivers. Anguhadluq shows from the distinct viewpoints the conical tents at the water's edge, the hunters setting out in kayaks, and the caribou. Composed of four stonecuts and several stencils, both splattered and brushed, the print is of such technical complexity that an edition of only nineteen was pulled." (Jack Butler in tape-recorded interview by John K. Robertson, spring 1976) The Inuit Print, exh. cat., from the National Museum of Man (Ottawa, ON), 1977, p. 233, pl. 141
