(1834-1903)
"ROTHERHITHE" - FROM THE THAMES SERIES (KENNEDY 66)
signed and dated 1860 in the plate; signed with the butterfly symbol in pencil in the margin
etching and drypoint sixth and final state
27.5 x 20cms; 10 7/8 x 7 7/8in.
NB
Rotherhithe is the area near Wapping on the banks of the Thames. The site of the image is the Angel Inn, Bermondsey, in the distance St. Paul's Cathedral is visible beyond the bend of the river. Rotherhithe was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1862 and then was titled "Wapping" in its later 1871 publication as part of the sixteen etchings Thames Set. The butterfly signature is unusual but occurs occasionally on the later impressions.
