Description:
The original marble was found in 1546 at the Baths of Caracalla in Rome during excavations commissioned by Pope Paul III. The figural group represents the myth of Dirce, who was tied to a wild bull by the sons of Antiope, Zeto and Amphion, who wanted to punish her for the ill-treatment inflicted on their mother, the first wife of Lykos, King of Thebes. The original marble is currently in the collection of the Museo Archeologico Nazionale Napoli in Naples, Italy. Estimate: $8,000 - $12,000. Condition report not yet available. Please check back.
