(american 1768-1836)
PORTRAIT OF A LADY BELIEVED TO BE BETSY MULFORD SUTLIFF
Oil on canvas
30 x 25 in. (76.2 x 63.5cm)
provenance:
The Estate of Gerald M. Bordman, Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania.
Estimate $2,000-3,000
Generally fair condition, with areas of restoration and retouch, and parts of painting somewhat hard to accurately, precisely 'read' under u.v. light due to varnish. Areas of restoration include: areas of upper background, particularly in the upper left quadrant. While figure's right arm does not appear ostensibly darker under u.v. light vis-à-vis surrounding areas, to the naked eye, much of the right upper arm and forearm are likely restored. Much of canvas has prominent surface craquelure; painting has newish relining and modern stretcher. Areas of retouch include: two spots to figure's upper right side of face, spots of retouch to parts of chest, dress and lower left arm
Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid.
