Description:
Emilio Amero (1901-1976) Untitled (Bathers) signed and dated \‘E. Amero 68\’ (lower right) polymer tempera on masonite 47 7/8 x 36 in. (121.5 x 91.4 cm.) Painted in 1968. A contemporary of such leading modernists as Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, José Clemente Orozco and Rufino Tamayo, Emilio Amero came of age as an artist in post-Revolutionary Mexico, a time of dramatic political and social change within the country. During the 1920s, Amero worked at the Department of Ethnographic Drawing, then led by the not yet famous Tamayo, copying pre-Columbian artefacts, and he served as Orozco\’s assistant on his murals for the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria before going on to receive his own mural commissions from Mexico\’s Minister of Public Education José Vasconcelos. Years later, after Amero had settled in the United States, the ideals and aesthetics of these modernist luminaries that he had absorbed during those radical years continued to reverberate in his work. Painted more than thirty years after he had moved to the United States, Nude Bathers, is a testament to the enduring influence of those formative years Amero spent in Mexico. Two volumetric women evoke the image of pre-Columbian goddesses, perhaps recalling Amero\’s time at the Department of Ethnographic Drawing working alongside Tamayo. Rendered in rich radiant hues and imbued with a monumentalizing quality, these blocky female figures also lend themselves to comparison with the indigenous women found in Rivera\’s murals and canvases. They likewise possess a graphic quality which is not surprising given Amero\’s lifelong commitment to both creating prints and establishing schools in New York, Oklahoma and Seattle dedicated to advancing the development of printmaking and particularly lithography. In addition to his own distinct contribution to Mexican modernism, Amero\’s legacy is also as a teacher. Among the many students who benefited from Amero\’s mentorship were the well-known artists Carlos Mérida, Alfredo Zalce, Francisco Dosamantes and Julio Castellanos.
