Description:
Carlo Amalfi (Sorrento 1707-1787 Naples) A courtship scene oil on canvas 76 x 106.5cm (29 15/16 x 41 15/16in). PROVENANCE: Sale, Sotheby's, Milan, 30 May 2006, lot 45 The present painting shows a remarkable interest in realism, leaning almost to the grotesque, which characterises figure subjects in late eighteenth century Neapolitan painting. Likely to have been a pupil of Francesco Solimena, Carlo Amalfi is regarded as one of the most illustrious Neapolitan portrait painters of the eighteenth century, and in 1772 was mentioned by Luigi Vanvitelli amongst the sixteen painters worthy of the title of Docente in the Accademia del Disegno. Amalfi's oeuvre displays a shift from his initial, official style to a more intimate and informal style which came closer to Gaspare Traversi's lectio . The attribution of the present painting to Amalfi was confirmed by Professor Nicola Spinosa at the time of the previous sale.

Description:
Carlo Amalfi (b. Vico Equense or Piano di Sorrento in the first half of the 18th century?) Family portrait, oil on canvas, 49,3 x 58,7 cm, framed Carlo Amalfi is one of the most important Neapolitan portraitists of the 18th century. Like other painters from Naples, he trained under Francesco Solimena. There are also influences of the work of Giuseppo Bonito and Sebastiano Conca in his oeuvre. In 1725 together with Giovan Battista Natali he painted two large rooms at the Castelcapuano in fresco technique, including a large equestrian portrait of King Charles of Naples and allegories of justice, peace, history and oratory, as well as portraits of the most important Italian law makers. Other work in his hand is to be found in the chapel at the Palazzo Sangro di Sansevero and the church of Sant’’’’Antonio in Sorrento. We are grateful to Prof Nicola Spinosa for identifying the artist.
