We are grateful to Prof Herwarth Röttgen,
whohas confirmed the attribution of this painting to FlaminioAllegrini.
It is a work byAllegrini,
who was born in 1587 in Cantiano bei Gubbio andlived in Rome until 1663. From around the age of fourteen in1601,
he was Cesari’’’’’’’’s closest pupil and colleague(Röttgen,
Il Cavalier d’’’’’’’’Arpino,
exh.cat.,
Palazzo Venezia,
Rome 1973,
p. 53f.; Röttgen,
Il Cavalier Giuseppe Cesari d’’’’’’’’Arpino. Ungrande pittore nello splendore della fama e nell’’’’’’’’incostanzadella fortuna,
Rome 2002,
p. 137,
204f.,
534). His female figures were influenced by Cesari’’’’’’’’s sweet,
doll-like type,
reaching the height oftheir style in the frescoes at the Villa Aldobrandini in Frascatiin 1602/3 (Röttgen 2002,
p. 338 ff.),
and in theImmaculata of 1602/7 (Madrid,
Accademia di S. Fernando;Röttgen 2002,
p. 343). The very elongated figure istypical of Flaminio Allegrini’’’’’’’’s painting as is thetendency,
compared to Cesari’’’’’’’’s figures,
towards a greater flatness and more corpulent plasticity,
reminiscent of the work of Cesari’’’’’’’’s brother,
Bernardino and certainly reflective of the possible influenceof Annibale Carracci’’’’’’’’s Assunta of 1601 in S. Maria del Popolo.Flaminio was particularly cherished the theme of theImmaculata,
as can be seen in his Maria degli Angeli inthe Gavotti Chapel in the Cathedral of Savona (Röttgen 2002,
534 f. ill. 43),
of which there is a drawing in theNational Gallery in Oslo and a drawing of the Immaculata similar tothe present picture in the Museum of Art,
Philadelphia.
