Description:
Patrick William Adam, R.S.A. (1854-1929) The library at Tyninghame signed and dated 'P W Adam 1925' (lower right) oil on canvas 18 3/8 x 16¾ in. (46.7 x 42.6 cm.) Lot Notes Tyninghame House is known as having had some of the grandest andmost sumptuously decorated interiors in Scotland. Altered by thearchitect William Burn in 1829, the estate had been owned by theEarls of Haddington since 1628. Following the sale, the house wasdivided into apartments by Kit Martin, which were then sold. Whenthe 12th Earl Haddington died in 1986, the contents, including afine collection of early portraits, silver, tapestries and ceramicswere sold at auction. The contents of the library, as depicted inthe present lot, were purchased by the National Library ofScotland. The collection included 345 volumes that had belonged toKing James VI's trusted adviser, Thomas Hamilton, 1st Earl ofHaddington (1563-1637).
