Description:
Marie-Edouard Adam (Brie-Comte-Robert 1847-1929 Le Havre) The American ship Olive S Southard of San Francisco in French waters off Le Havre signed and dated 'Ed Adam 1884' and with anchor device oil on canvas 25 x 36 in. (63.5 x 91.4 cm.) Thomas Jefferson Southard (1808-1896), a descendant of Samuel Foster and therefore 'A Son of the American Revolution', was born in Sagadahoc, Maine and, after starting work as a blacksmith, became a famous shipbuilder in Richmond, Maine. Beginning in 1840 over the next fifty years he and his company built some sixty sailing vessels, including in 1871, the 1200-ton ship, Olive S Southard, named after a daughter-in-law. Later T.J. Southard became a shipowner, hence his house flag which showed his initials and an anvil in its centre. The Olive S Southard traded on the Pacific coast of North America and her master in the years 1883 to 1889, even after she was taken over by Montgomery & Colwell, was M.H. Walker. She is seen here 'making her number', JQWP.

Description:
PORTRAIT OF THE SHIP HINDOSTAN , SCHOOL OF EDOUARD ADAM SR. (FRENCH, 1847-1929). Watercolor on paper, unsigned. Large portrait with wonderful detail. In a frame, 32"h. 43.25"w. Research has located several British ships named Hindostan (variously Hindustan ), and one appears similar in size and rigging was an East Indiaman purchased by the Royal Navy in 1795 and was lost to fire in 1804. However, the date of this watercolor would suggest a later ship by that name. See also lot 249 for another ship portait by the same hand. Estimate $ 1,500-2,500 We provide condition information when it is requested by a potential bidder, as a part of our dedication to excellent customer service. Description:
Édouard Adam (French, 1847-1929) The Richard Rylands passing the Fastnet Rock signed 'Ed. Adam', inscribed 'Havre' and dated 1881 (lower right) oil on canvas 85 x 130.2cm (33 1/2 x 51 1/4in). The full-rigged three-masted merchantman Richard Rylands was built by King in New Brunswick, Canada, in 1863. Registered at 1,390 tons, she measured 203 feet in length with a 40 foot beam and was owned first by Seddons of Liverpool who put her into the Indian trade. In the late 1860s Seddons sold her to Vaughan Brothers, also of Liverpool, who placed her under the command of Captain Sheckell. Remaining in the Indian trade, she disappears from record in 1877 after being sold to German owners. This painting by Adam shows her wearing the house flag of Vaughan Brothers to whom she belonged for most of her working life in British registry.
