Clio, the mythical Muse of History holding her attributes, the scroll and the torch, helping the heir presumptive to create "Mindelunden" (The Memorial Grove) in Jægerspris.
One of the memory pillars is seen in the background.
Heir presumptive Frederik had part of the park at Jægerspris Castle laid out for a memorial grove ("Mindelunden") to remember people of merit in the Danish history.
The sculptor Johannes Wiedewelt made the memory pillars.
Today the "Mindelunden" is still worth a visit.
Patrick Kragelund, "Abildgaard.
Kunstneren mellem oprørerne", 1999, vol.
I, p.
124-126, discusses the motif and writes (in Danish): "With her torch Clio illuminates the achievements of our forefathers, and the Prince sees to it that Fama is trumpeting out the knowledge of famous persons in the history of Denmark, Norway and Holstein".
