Pre-Lot Text
JOHN WHITE ABBOTT (1763-1851)
(Lots 56-8)
Born in Exeter, Devon, Abbott lived in the town throughout his entire career, as an apothecary and a surgeon, and was appointed Deputy Lieutenant of Devonshire in 1831. A friend and patron of Francis Towne, under whose guidance he learnt to paint, Abbott delighted in painting views of his home county, but also embarked upon an important sketching tour of the Lake District and Scotland in 1791, carefully recording the date on each work.
Exhibited
London, W/S Fine Art, Summer 2006, no. 14.
View Lot Notes ›
This view looks towards Clifton from above St Vincent's Rocks, near Leigh Woods, an area made famous by Francis Danby and other Bristol artists such as Samuel Jackson. From his home county of Devon, Abbott would have passed through Bristol on journeys to and from London.
