After the draw of the Milanese derby Christie’s vs. Sotheby’s for modern and contemporary art (25-26 May) and the excellent results of the department achieved by Farsetti auction house in Prato (27-28 May), even Pandolfini Casa d’Aste is about to propose its usual spring appointment dedicated to modern and contemporary art and design. On Tuesday 14th June, in the splendid ancient building Palazzo Ramirez-Montalvo, the Florentine auction house will be presenting two very interesting sales with important works from an artistic and economic point of view, which promise to satisfy the numerous Italian collectors.
The first session is in the afternoon (at 4.30 pm) and is completely dedicated to design, an extraordinary sale offering a variety of pieces (79 in total), boasting the excellence of design “Made in Italy”: a typically Italian, now internationally acclaimed design and productive know how. In this selection highlights include a core of lots by Piero Fornasetti, a Milanese artist celebrated as one of the most original talents of the 20th century for giving life to a language of immediately recognisable and always fascinating images. Fornasetti’s world is magical, full of image and colour, saturated with spirit and humour, elements that can be identified in the lots offered by Pandolfini: an Architectural Cupboard (Cassettoncino Architettura, estimate 4-5 thousand euros) recalls a classical building; a chair is decorated with a multitude of butterflies (estimate 5-6 thousand euros); a round mirror is transformed into a golden sun (estimate 1.2-1.6 thousand euros), while a small table becomes an occasion to portray the face of a woman (estimate 500-800 thousand euros).
Pandolfini’s catalogue also features Gio Ponti. The Italian designer famous for having designed many objects in the most varied fields, is present at auction with six chairs of the Leggera series produced by Cassina in 1951 (estimate 1.8-2.2 thousand euros), a set of four chairs for Parco dei Principi Hotel in Rome (estimate 2.2-2.5 thousand euros), but also with a wall unit (Parete Attrezzata, estimate 3-4 thousand euros) and Bookshelf and Sofa (Libreria e Poltrona, estimate 2.5-3.5 thousand euros), interior design objects designed and realised around 1950 for the Roman apartment of the engineer Leproni.
Other highlights from the Italian design section include an unusual Mouth of Truth Bed by Mario Ceroli (Letto Bocca della Verità, estimate 3.8-4.2 thousand euros), Table and chairs budding system by Pier Luigi Spadolini (Tavolo e sedie sistema boccio, estimate 3-3.5 thousand euros) and various works by Osvaldo Borsani, among which a walnut table from 1950 (estimate 2.4-2.8 thousand euros) and a Divano D70 sofa dated 1956, valued at 2.2-2.6 thousand euros.
After this short sale dedicated to designers, Pandolfini auction house has scheduled its evening session (at 5 pm), centred uniquely on works of modern and contemporary art. Super top lot of the auction is Concetto Spaziale (Forma), a green “hole” realised by Lucio Fontana in 1963, valued between 350 and 450 thousand euros, from a private Milanese collection. It is a typical work by Fontana, whose poetics of Spatialism emerge powerfully: the priority is not colouring or painting the canvas, but creating on it a construction that illustrates spatial three-dimensionality to the beholder.
With much more contained estimates compared to Fontana’s oil, the Tuscan auction house has included in its catalogue other remarkable works, including Lo Studio by Franco Gentilini (estimate 40-50 thousand euros) – a work dated 1938, from a private Bolognese collection – an “optical” painting by Victor Vasarely entitled Stri-Ond-Vall (estimate 30-40 thousand euros) and Untitled (Senza titolo), a mixed technique realised by Mimmo Paladino and Sol LeWitt (estimate 30-40 thousand euros).
The selection of Italian artists in this auction is particularly varied, with names such as Felice Casorati with Uova e Genziane (estimate 25-30 thousand euros), Mario Sironi with Montagne (estimate 20-30 thousand euros) – a work accompanied by an authentic photograph of Francesco Meloni – and Mimmo Paladino with Laboratory (estimate 20-25 thousand euros). And also: Vendemmia in Giardino by Umberto Lilloni (estimate 18-22 thousand euros), Omaggio a Bacco by Gino Severini, Spirali by Roberto Crippa, Senza Titolo by Mimmo Rotella (estimate for each lot, 15-18 thousand euros) and the marvellous Dal Caravaggio by Antonio Nunziante, an oil on canvas dated 2010 valued at 15-20 thousand euros.
Finally, Pandolfini is proposing a fascinating selection of sculptures. Highlight of this core of works is Mother and Child by Henry Moore (estimate 35-45 thousand euros), a bronze in which the British artist, using harmonious shapes and lines, reflects upon the visceral relation between mother and child. We should also mention a bronze bas-relief by Fausto Melotti entitled Vaghe stelle dell’Orsa (estimate 10-15 thousand euros) and an Untitled characterised by very bright colours by dai Leoncillo Leonardi (estimate 5-10 thousand euros), but also Pink Elephant – Sun, Moon, Stars by Alexander Calder (estimate 2-2.5 thousand euros) and Orso con Scimmia by Antonio Ligabue (estimate 2-2.5 thousand euros), a work accompanied by a certificate of guarantee from the Galleria Steccata of Parma.
