March At Meeting Art: Modern And Contemporary Art

Wednesday 9 March 2011

The renowned Piedmontese auction house, which is about to open a new office even in Rome, always lives up to its expectations and even this year is busy working on its auctions, proposing various appointments with art during March and offering collectors a very wide selection. The sales will be starting on 12th March and continue until Sunday 3rd April.
The first four sessions are dedicated to 19th-century paintings, works of widespread genres and very appreciated by the public (landscapes, portraits and still lives) for quite accessible prices, with highest estimates of 10-12 thousand euros. However, some works stand out in this groups for their artistic as well as pecuniary value. It is the case of Contadinella allo stagno (Country-girl at the pond), 1888, an oil on panel by Lorenzo Delleani – the strong piece of the 19th-century paintings – which starting from an auction base of 40,000 euros aims at reaching the estimate value of 80-90 thousand euros. The work was displayed in an exhibition dedicated to the artist between 2000 and 2001 and is listed in more than one catalogue. Another place of honour is held by Lorenzo Delleani with a painting dated 1894, Presso Chatillon, proposed with an estimate of 30-32 thousand euros. Not far from this figure we find a handful of paintings, a portrait, 3 landscapes and a domestic life scene: Bellezza Mediterranea (Mediterranean Beauty) by Sebastiano Panunzi (22-25 thousand euros), Pescatori (Fishermen) at Marina di Ravenna by Italo Mus (21-24 thousand euros), Luci e colori sul mare (Lights and colours on the sea) by Ernesto Barbero (20-22 thousand euros), Alto Canavese by Giuseppe Camino (20-22 thousand euros) and the evocative Serenità domestica (Domestic Serenity) by Luigi Pastega (28-32 thousand euros).
The latter is an interior scene, animated only by the presence of human figures in the centre, which are used as a visual pivot, but also by the vivid description of some objects and pieces of furniture which describe the modest – but happy – condition of the characters depicted.
The auction of modern and contemporary art starts on Saturday 19th March, featuring over 1000 pieces, shared over nine appointments. Here the competition between the most prestigious pieces increases, considering that each session has a noteworthy masterpiece and includes names that have made the history of art.
The first session is presenting three renowned artists of very different genres: an unusual composition by Victor Vasarely (estimate 55-60 thousand euros), a very impressive work by Roberto Crippa, Spirals (45-50 thousand euros), which has also earned the honour of the catalogue front cover, and Wrapped Stair Case by Christo (90-100 thousand euros).
Undisputed star of the sale is an oil on canvas by Karel Appel, De Garden dated 1958, estimate 125-140 thousand euro. For this piece, which was already auctioned at Christie’s in 1996, collectors will have to wait until the eighth session on Saturday 2nd April, and the same for Composition n°20 by Mauro Reggiani (36-40 thousand euros), which has also been displayed various times.
Lot 460 is a déjà vu: Tombeaux bleus by Georges Mathieu – with an estimate between 80 and 90 thousand euros – is back at auction trying its luck for the second time at Meeting Art, after being left unsold in April 2010. Among the most interesting international names in the fourth session we find Bengt Lindstrom and again Karel Appel, respectively with Le jeu avec l’ange (23-26 thousand euros) and Untitled (36-40thousand euros).
The following session is dominated by two Italian artists who generally have a good market value: by Valerio Adami, whose hammer prices often exceed their estimate values, we find Yo Yo Monument dated 2009,  auctioned for 45-50 thousand euros, while La clessidra grigia e viola (The grey and purple hourglass) by Mario Tozzi, recorded also at the General Archive of the master’s works, is offered with an estimate between 72 and 80 thousand euros. For lovers of Guttuso, the catalogue features two pieces, a landscape and an interesting work of historical and political character: Villa Morra a Cortona, oil on panel dated 1938-39 (45-50 thousand euros) and Chile (11 September 1973 in Santiago) or Omaggio ad Allende (Rogo dei Libri) dated 1973, tempera, ink and collage on interfaced paper (36-40 thousand euros).
Highlight among the sculptures is a bronze by Arturo Martini, Torso of young man (45-50 thousand euros).
The long parade of lots ends in style with a singular figurative work by Afro, Vase of Flowers dated 1939, at auction for 72-80 thousand euros. It is worth mentioning that last year a work by this artist – always very appreciated by both the Italian and the international market – was the best sale at Meeting Art’s auction in April.
