Workmen refurbishing a Tudor home have discovered a painting thought to date back to the late 16th Century. The painting’s Shropshire Scroll pattern, a design which is unique to the county, is the largest and most dramatic of its kind, experts said. It was discovered on Broadway in Shifnal, hidden behind a new wall in a Grade II listed property. It is thought the 7ft (2.1m) by 8ft (2.4m) painting has been hidden for over a hundred years.
Including the new find, there are only 18 examples of the Shropshire Scroll known, all in the county. Shropshire Council conservation officer, Sarah Lowe, said it was a “very exciting” discovery. “It’s priceless. The other known [Shropshire Scroll] examples are less than half the size of this new find. “Other examples of the design are mostly depicted in one or two colours and are therefore not as dramatic.” The painting was uncovered on 27 January, during renovation work ahead of the building becoming a restaurant.(BBC News)
