Self Portrait With A Black Eye, a self-portrait of Lucian Freud sporting a black eye after a punch-up with a taxi-driver, will be offered at auction by Sotheby’s in London next 10th February, with an estimate between 3 and 4 million pounds. The painting rediscovered by the auction house has been hidden to the public for almost 30 years in a private European collection.
The famous English painter executed the suggestive painting around 1978, after fighting with a taxi driver. That day there was a man waiting for him in his studio to be portrayed. The man saw him dashing through the front door with his face marked by the row, the artist looked at him and said: “Go away, I have to paint myself in this state”. Obviously it is not a mystery that Lucian Freud’s life has been very turbulent and violence has played a central role throughout it. “I have had a lot of fights, not because I liked fighting, but just because people said things to me to which I felt the only reply was to hit them”, stated the painter a few years ago during an interview.
