|
Tuesday 15 December 2009

The appointment with modern and contemporary art is tomorrow, 16th December 2009, at the auction house Blindarte in Naples. An interesting catalogue, divided into two sale sessions, which is proposing about 400 works from the most important Italian and international collections.
In the first session, which starts at 5 pm, two beautiful drawings by Amedeo Modigliani will be auctioned. Lot 128 is entitled Figura Mistica, a pencil and watercolour on paper executed by the great master in 1916 and estimated between 100 and 140 thousand euros. An amazing work representing a plastic face, which is very similar to the physiognomy of African masks. The androgynous character of the enigmatic and inexpressive eyes similar to two slits show the intensity of the influence of tribal art on Modigliani, who assimilated its comprehensive spiritual essence, though without a specific source of inspiration.
The second piece by Amedeo Modigliani is Cariatide di profilo, an ink on paper dated from 1912, valued at 140-180 thousand euros. An extraordinary work in which the old woman, portrayed in this drawing, is executed with a strong, rigid and linear trait, the proportions are extended and the physiognomy stylized, all elements that represent the graphic equivalent of the features carved by the artist on stone.
Another important piece at auction is Seated Nude by Henry Moore, presented with an estimate between 40 and 60 thousand euros. In this work the English sculptor represents a female figure maintaining a steady trait and a strong drawing vigour; the small head, the prominent physicality, the anatomy massified in the torso and in the hips show his acquaintance with synthetic cubism like the influence of Brancusi and of pre-Columbian sculpture, acquired by the artist during his stay in Paris and in Italy during the Twenties.
A treat of the auction is a pastel by Renè Magritte portraying a dog (estimate 8-12 thousand euros), but also an oil on panel entitled Paesaggio con funghi by Filippo De Pisis (estimate 18-22 thousand euros) and a still life by Giorgio Morandi (estimate 9-13 thousand euros).
Moreover, the session includes some works by Salvatore Fiume, Antonio Bueno, Bruno Cassinari and Neapolitan masters such Renato Barisani, Gianni Pisani, Guido Biasi, Mario Persico and many others.
The second session, which starts at 6.30 pm, includes a very rare and meaningful work by Robert Rauschenberg: Parsons’ Live Plants Ammonia, assembled cardboard boxes from 1971 (estimate on request). The work, which has already been on view in many exhibitions, represents one of the most successful and sought-after works from the early Sixties by one of the most famous contemporary artists, who has recently passed away. This is the first chance to buy a work of the Cardboard Boxes series, always displayed, but kept from the start in worldwide famous private and public safe collections.
The second session also includes La Fotografa Fotografica by Michelangelo Pistoletto, estimated between 74 and 95 thousand euros. Executed between 1962 and 1974, the work belongs to the series of Quadri Specchianti (Mirroring Pictures), displayed for the first time by the artist during those years in Turin. The mirroring pictures are the foundation of Pistoletto’s work, as he retrieves the mirror, object of common use, reinterpreting it as a virtual space where spectators, mirroring themselves, enter the work and become part of it. The woman portrayed here is Nini Mulas – wife of the Italian photographer Ugo Mulas – presented from behind, with her face almost entirely hidden, as she tries to capture with her camera the image which is beyond the reflecting surface.
The auction at Blindarte includes a very rare volume by Marcel Duchamp, Eau & gaz à tous les étages, executed in 1958 which also contains the artist’s famous Self-portrait in profile. The work is presented with an estimate of 60-80 thousand euros. The sale also includes another volume by Duchamp published in 1966 and containing 79 notes by the artist concerning The Large Glass, Duchamp’s absolute masterpiece (estimate 18-25 thousand euros).
There is a magnificent untitled work by Jannis Kounellis which comes from the Kewenig Galerie of Köln (estimate 50-70 thousand euors) while there is an interesting mixed technique by Afro (estimate 50-70 thousand euros).
Unmissable Andy Warhol’s works: a Vesuvius (estimate 40-60 thousand euros) and Untitled – From Wild Raspberries (estimate 35-45 thousand euros).
The auction is proposing various works by Joseph Beuys, among these two drawings on paper, one dated from 1958 and one from 1972 (Documenta boero), unique and sought-after works by the great German artist coming from Galleria Lucio Amelio in Naples and both estimated at 20-25 thousand euros. It is worth mentioning also an ink on plaster by Beuys, dating back to the performance In difesa della Natura (In defence of Nature) in Bolognano, 1984, (estimate 15-20 thousand euros) and a folded drawing by Sol Le Witt, estimated at 17-21 thousand euros.
In the second part of the modern and contemporary sale there will also be a group of works which connote the auction for their great refinement and international character, excellent bargains for the most refined collectors. Among them, there are interesting pieces by Stefano Arienti, Mario Airò, Vedovamazzei, Tracey Emin, Herman Nitsch, Shozo Shimamoto, Mimmo Paladino, Sandro Chia and a rich group of works executed by Chinese artists, among which Jian Ling, He Sen and Wang Quingsong.
