Impressionist & Modern Art: Sotheby’s Beats Christie’s

After the auctions held in May, the two leading auction houses, Sotheby’s and Christie’s, challenged each other again in an enthralling auction of Impressionist and Modern Art, just one day apart. During the two evening sales the results seemed more satisfying compared to the previous months, however it is clear that the market crisis is even making collectors be more prudent, demanding and selective, and therefore they are willing to invest on important works, but not for such excessive figures.
First it was Christie’s turn, selling 31 lots out of 46 for a total of 37,235,550£ (buyer’s premium included) equivalent to about 43,509,890€. During the event, although Picasso was expected to be the favourite, the artist who stood out most was Claude Monet: Au parc Monceau, was knocked down for 6,313,250£. Unsold a Pissarro, withdrawn at the last moment from the auction due to a disagreement about the ownership of the painting stolen at the time of Nazism. Sotheby’s achieved a better result than Christie’s despite auctioning fewer lots: 23 pieces out of 27 were sold, equal to about 85% of the total. The total intake was 33,531,150£ equivalent to 39,479,519€ (buyer’s premium included), excellent result considering that the pre-sale total prevision was about 26,750,000-37,270,000£. As expected Pablo Picasso’s Homme a l’épeé conquered the title of top lot for 6,985,250£, equivalent to 8,224,421€, followed by another Picasso sold for 4,297,250£ (about 5,059,575€). Among the unsold lots Henry de Touluse-Lautrec.
Here are the top lots of the two auctions.
