Con Artist, the “docu-comedy” about New York-based artist Mark Kostabi directed by Michael Sládek, will premiere on April 25 at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival. Con Artist examines the concepts of art, money and celebrity through the career of Mark Kostabi, with the aim to explore the eternally complex relationship between art, commerce, fame and fakery. According to the director, the idea for this film came after one of Kostabi’s painters invited him to Kostabi’s popular self-financed tv-show Title This, broadcast on NYC public access television. After visiting Kostabi’s studio, Sládek decided it was the moment to produce “a fascinating and farcical peek into the art world.” Shot primarily in New York, where the Kostabi World headquarters is located, but also in Rome and in Southern California, the documentary features art personalities and people of Kostabi’s circle including, among the others, filmmakers Michel Gondry and Nick Zedd, Glenn O’Brien — Editorial Director of Brant Publications —, gossip columnist Baird Jones and art critic Donald Kuspit.(FlashArt)
