The auction house Capitolium Art is inaugurating the spring season with an extraordinary sale which will attract, in the prestigious venue of Palazzo Cigola – Fenaroli – Vallotti in Brescia, many collectors and operators of the sector, proposing a thorough and rigorous selection made by experts, always keen to privilege aesthetic quality and the importance of the lots introduced in the catalogue. Capitolium Art is proposing to the public a wide offer.
The sector of ancient art still represents a safe reference for who is interested in investing in antiques. Estimators of the past are aware that a precious object purchased today can become a unique piece tomorrow.
The auction house Capitolium Art is presenting on 28th March 2009, at 4.00 pm the first session dedicated to “Ancient and Nineteenth-century Art”. Collectors and experts of the International antiques market will be attracted by many works of ancient and Nineteenth-century art, among which marvellous paintings and important pieces of furniture of excellent making, precious art objects and porcelain masterpieces.
In this first session many interesting works will stand out such as one by Giovanni Muzzioli (1854-1894), an oil on canvas dated 1881 entitled “Al tempio di Bacco” (At Bacchus’s Temple) and authenticated by Graziella Marinelli Braglia. This beautiful painting by the artist from Modena will be presented with an estimate between 55 and 65 thousand euros (auction base: 52 thousand euros).
Besides this sophisticated work, Capitolium Art will present to the audience also “Ettore, Andromaca e Astianatte” by Giacinto Riboni, copy of valuable making of Gaspere Landi’s painting kept at the Museo Gazzola of Piacenza, which will be put up for auction with a valuation of 40-50 thousand euros (auction base: 35 thousand euros).
Among the lots of higher artistic quality, but also of economic value, there is “Riconoscimento di San Pietro” (Recognition of Saint Peter) by a Neapolitan artist from the Seventeenth century, estimate 25-35 thousand euros (auction base: 20 thousand euros) and “Madonna con il Bambino” (Madonna with Child) by Francesco Bissolo, a Venetian artist born around 1470 who was probably a disciple of Girolamo da Treviso the Old and who collaborated actively with the great Venetian master Giovanni Bellini. The estimate of this marvellous and refined Madonna with Child is between 25 and 35 thousand euros (auction base: 20 thousand euros).
Moreover, we should point out some works which are sought-after by collectors: “The departure of the prince on crusades”, an oil on canvas by Hippolite Paul Delaroche, estimate 15-20 thousand euros (auction base: 13 thousand euros); ”The newly born” by Rudolph Epp, estimate 13-15 thousand euros (auction base: 11,500 euros) and “Portrait of a Gentlewoman” by Cesare Campini, valued between 8 and 10 thousand euros (auction base: 9,200 euros).
Among the curiosities at auction that will capture the attention of collectors who are passionate about important ancient objects and furniture there are: a rare couple of Cloisonnè Vases from the Edo period, decorated with flowers and dragons on a turquoise background, which come with an estimate between 35 and 45 thousand euros (auction base: 29 thousand euros). But also an elegant and rare couple of porcelain vases from the Nineteenth century of French provenance, estimate 18-20 thousand euros (auction base: 15 thousand euros). There is an important furniture selection, such as the two golden carved consoles from the Eighteenth century, valued between 20 and 24 thousand euros (auction base: 16 thousand euros) and a walnut drop-leaf chest of drawers made in Veneto in the Eighteenth century, estimated between 15 and 18 thousand euros.
Finally, not only to buy but also to admire is the sculpture by a Lombard master of the Seventeenth century. A couple of winged angels, polychromatic carved wood, which will be proposed with an estimate between 25 and 35 thousand euros (auction base: 20,700 euros).
The last appointment of the month with the auctions of Capitolium Art will be on Sunday 29th March at 4.00 pm and will present modern and contemporary art. An excellent occasion to evaluate the market trends and anticipate the possible evolution of the collectors’ taste, as they are always looking for new stimuli, proposals and occasions.
The star of this second and last session is “I Fidanzati” (The Sweethearts), an oil on canvas executed in 1962 by Mario Tozzi. The work authenticated by the general archive of the works of the artist born in Urbino, starts from an estimate between 60 and 70 thousand euros (auction base: 35 thousand euros). Interesting two paintings by Pietro Marussing, one of the founders of the Twentieth-century group gathered around the figure of Margherita Sarfatti. Indeed, his painting reflects the tendency of the group to retrieve the dictates of the Renaissance pictorial tradition, characterised by careful plastic and volumetric relations and by themes that are usually referable to the family and middle-class life. The works by Marussing to be proposed by Capitolium Art are: “Interior with flowers and tureen”, estimate 30-35 thousand euros (auction base: 20 thousand euros) and “Figure of man with fez.” estimate 30-35 thousand euros (auction base: 20 thousand euros).
A section of the auction dedicated to modern and contemporary art is dedicated to works by Gianni Bertini, painter who started in 1946 choosing an abstract style because as he claims: “I have become non-figurative for giving a real meaning to war events”. Interesting is a China ink from 1957, recorded at the general archive of Gianni Bertini’s works in Florence, which will start from an estimate between 5-6 thousand euros (auction base: 4 thousand euros), but also a mixed technique on velvet and paper dated 1960, estimate 6-7 thousand euros (auction base: 5 thousand euros ) and another China ink from 1957, valued 4-5 thousand euros (auction base: 3 thousand euros).
In conclusion Capitolium Art will propose to its public a lithograph, pastels and collage of Christ, entitled “Wrapped Trees, Project for the Avenue de Champs-Elysèes”, estimate 12-14 thousand euros (auction base 10 thousand euros). But also an oil on cardboard by Emilio Tadini, valued between 15 and 18 thousand euros (auction base: 13,500 euros) and “Auto”, a perspex and neon executed in 2007 by Marco Lodola, which will be presented with an estimate of 5-6 thousand euros (auction base: 3,500 euros).
