SaLon Gallery presents Sarah Maple’s first public solo show – “This Artist Blows” and a special series among her most recent work entitled “Who Would Wood Wank?” at MEWS42 Gallery in South Kensington, both public shows running from 18th October 2008 to 16th November 2008.
Marking London’s art season debut is one of the most audacious art shows of the year, disclosing a collection of works by a young and highly promising female artist.
23 year – old Sarah Maple is best known for her daring yet unpretentious self – portraits and photographs that humorously yet astoundingly take on issues of culture, self – identity and politics. This show will be held at SaLon Gallery in Notting Hill.
One of the highlights of “This Artist Blows” is the premiere of the film “Who Would Wood Wank”, presented as part of an eponymous series of multi-media art works by Sarah Maple and on view at MEWS42 Gallery, a private contemporary art gallery in South Kensington, London.
Co-produced with Dazed & Confused’s Jefferson Hack, “Who Would Wood Wank” shows Maple “wanking” a paintbrush, alternating from her wearing a burka, to wearing a Dolce & Gabbana couture dress. The dress, which was covered in paint and signed by Maple, was archived by Dolce & Gabbana for their private art collection. Both the dress and burka will be on view at the exhibition. This part of the show will also exhibit some of the most thought-provoking artworks Maple has created in the past year including ones resulting from Maple’s collaboration with the fashion designer Reem Alasadi dur-
ing the SS08 London Fashion Week. The works were created on the premises of the historical Royal Academy venue at Burlington Gardens.
Also on show at SaLon Gallery, will be a collection of Maple’s new paintings and photographic works, that blur the lines between popular culture and religious devotion in a consistently witty manner, urging us to challenge traditional notions of religion, identity and the societal role of women.
Sarah Maple believes that personal identity can never be fully captured on a photograph or painting, that art cannot expose all her complexities. Maple is attractive and seems to be manipulating her sexuality in order to make certain points with comic insight. The artist will be present at the private
launch party on October 16th.
