Hirst Adds Perrotin To His Dealer Roster

Friday 31 October 2008

Damien Hirst is to work with the dealer Emmanuel Perrotin and is planning an exhibition in his Paris gallery in April 2010. This is a surprise return to the dealer who hosted one of Hirst’s first solo shows in 1991—and claims to be the only dealer never to have made a profit from the artist.
“Everyone has written that Hirst wanted to bite the hand that fed him,” said Mr Perrotin, referring to the artist’s decision to bypass his dealers by going straight to auction at Sotheby’s in September. “But there’s a difference between asserting a bit of independence and turning your back on your dealers.”
The pair met in 1990, when Mr Perrotin selected Hirst as one of a group of artists exhibited in the dealer’s Rue Beaubourg gallery/apartment. The show included a spot painting on sale for $1,000 and a medicine cabinet that was bought by the French collector Gilles Fuchs for an undisclosed price. The following year, Mr Perrotin gave Hirst a one-man show titled “When Logics die”, which included autopsy tables with photographs of suicide victims. It was financed by Hirst’s long-time London dealer, Jay Jopling of White Cube.
Hirst then met Mr Perrotin again in 2007 at the Pinchuk Art Foundation in Kiev when, out of the blue, the artist suggested re-doing an exhibition, an idea that was finalised at the end of last year. The gallery said it was too early to say whether the 2010 exhibition would be a one-off show or the beginning of a longer-standing artist-dealer relationship.(The Art Newspaper)
